Physical Education Options

3 credits required to fulfill District 622 graduation requirements

9TH GRADE COURSES

  • Physical Education 9 (required)
  • **Teamwork Through Competition (New for 2007) elective credit ONLY

Category 1:

The next required physical education credit (for the class of 2010 and beyond) must come from one of the 4 classes below and is strongly recommended for sophomore year.

  • Lifetime Wellness
  • Strength Training for Personal Fitness I
  • Strength Training for Athletes I

Category 2:

The third required physical education credit (for the class of 2010 and beyond) can come from any of the classes below or a different category 1 class.

Course Descriptions

430 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9 (required)

Open to: Grade 9 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This is the required course that all 9th graders must take to satisfy the graduation requirement. This course is designed to assess your personal fitness level and increase it through fitness activities, strength training and team games.

CATEGORY 1 PE ELECTIVES (Classes of 2010 and beyond)

The second required credit must come from the following four options.

431 POWER WALKING/AEROBICS I

Open to: Grades 10 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

This coeducational course will focus on developing a personal fitness plan with an emphasis on power walking and aerobic activities.

433 LIFETIME WELLNESS

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

This coeducational course will aid students in pursuing a lifetime goal of wellness. Activities may include badminton, bocce, Frisbee golf, volleyball, horseshoes and softball.

444 STRENGTH TRAINING FOR PERSONAL FITNESS I

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

This coeducational course is designed to introduce strength training as a way to improve personal fitness. Emphasis is on basic techniques and proper safety procedures.

448 STRENGTH TRAINING FOR ATHLETES I

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

This coeducational course is designed to introduce students to strength training as a way to improve athletic performance. It will include basic strength training, agility drills and plyometrics.

CATEGORY 2 PE ELECTIVES (Classes of 2010 and beyond)

The third required credit must come from the following options OR from a different course in category 1.

432 POWER WALKING/AEROBICS II

Open to: Grades 10 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Power Walking/Aerobics I

The development of a personal fitness plan is the focus. Power walking, aerobics and strength training are continued from the first level, along with knowledge about exercise and diet.

434 INDOOR RACQUET SPORTS

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

The lifetime leisure sports of badminton and pickleball will be the focus. Students will be introduced to intermediate and advanced skills and strategies of both singles and doubles play.

435 RACQUET SPORTS

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

The lifetime leisure sports of tennis, badminton, pickleball and paddle tennis form the base of this class. Intermediate and advanced skills and strategies of both singles and doubles play are covered

437 FALL TEAM SPORTS

Open to: Grades 10 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

The emphasis will be to develop good sportsmanship and leadership through competitive games. Activities may include football, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, softball, lacrosse, volleyball and basketball.

438 WINTER TEAM SPORTS

Open to: Grades 10 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

The emphasis will on development of good sportsmanship and leadership through competition. Activities may include lacrosse, volleyball, basketball, team handball, arena games and floor hockey.

439 SPRING TEAM SPORTS

Open to: Grades 10 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

Good sportsmanship and leadership are emphasized. Activities may include football, soccer, softball, lacrosse, volleyball, team handball and arena games.


443 COACHING, CONDITIONING AND COMPETITION

Open to: Grades 11 & 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

This course will focus on conditioning, weight training and competitive games that are performed indoors and out in many different environments and climates. Games will involve officiating, tournament development, coaching and team leadership skills.


445 STRENGTH TRAINING FOR PERSONAL FITNESS II

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Strength Training I – either version

This is the second course in a sequence of strength training for personal fitness. Students will participate in a personal fitness program focusing on lifetime wellness through the use of weights and cardiovascular activities.

446 STRENGTH TRAINING FOR PERSONAL FITNESS III

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Strength Training II – either version

This is the third course in a sequence of strength training for personal fitness

447 STRENGTH TRAINING FOR PERSONAL FITNESS IV

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Strength Training III – either version

This is the fourth course in a sequence of strength training for personal fitness

449 STRENGTH TRAINING FOR ATHLETES II

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Strength Training I – either version

This is the second course in a sequence of strength training for athletic performance. Students will learn intermediate lifts in addition to sports specific agility and plyometrics workouts designed to increase athletic success.

4450 STRENGTH TRAINING FOR ATHLETES III

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Strength Training II – either version

This is the third course in a sequence of strength training for athletic performance.

451 STRENGTH TRAINING FOR ATHLETES IV

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Strength Training III – either version

This is the fourth course in a sequence of strength training for athletic performance.

ELECTIVE COURSES

The following course can be used as a general elective credit only, not as a Physical Education elective.

436 TEAMWORK THROUGH COMPETITION

Open to: Grade 9 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This is an elective course designed for 9th grade students who love physical education classes. It will focus on teamwork and character development through participation in team activities and team building challenges.

HEALTH EDUCATION

440 HEALTH

Open to: Grade 9 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This is the required course that all students must take to satisfy graduation requirements in District 622. Units studied include Life Management Skills, CPR and First Aid, Aging and Dying, Chemical Awareness, and Human Sexuality

455 HEALTH II (NEW)

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Health 440

This course takes an in-depth look at challenging topics that teens face on a daily basis. It will focus on the social and mental consequences of peer pressure, relationships, conflict resolution and chemical use.

439 SPORTS MANAGEMENT

Open to: Grades 10 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9

This course will consist of a combination of classroom and physical activities. Sports nutrition, positive coaching techniques, tournament organization, and careers in sports-related fields will be covered. The course content will prepare you for managing and coaching youth teams and will familiarize you with career opportunities related to sports.

441 INTRODUCTION TO ATHLETIC TRAINING

Open to: Grades 11 and 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: PE 9 and Health 440

This course is designed to give the student insight and experience in the field of athletic training/sports medicine. It is highly recommended that students registering for this class be certified in First Aid and CPR.
