Students interested in taking business courses in a specific area of interest can use the following chart to plan their class choices. Please be sure to check each course description for prerequisites.




205 CAREER INVESTIGATION (required)

Open to: Grades 11 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of a variety of career clusters, as well as attributes and aptitudes needed in particular types of occupations and careers. During the course, students will determine personal interests, establish career action plans, investigate careers and evaluate career choices in relationship to life goals and personal attributes.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

201 INTRODUCTION TO WORD PROCESSING

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Introduction to Word Processing is highly recommended for all students. This course is an overview of needed keyboarding skills and familiarizes students with Microsoft Word. Students will complete letters, reports, tables and other types of business documents efficiently. Emphasis will also be placed on using the computer as a tool to compose, revise and improve writing skills. Successful completion may earn 11th and 12th grade students 1 college credit at Century College.

220 ADVANCED WORD PROCESSING

Open to Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm or better

This course is designed for students who wish to learn advanced word processing applications using Microsoft Word and improve their keyboarding skills. Advanced word processing features include footnotes and endnotes, columns, tables, borders and shading, clipart and mail-merge. Students will also work to improve keyboarding skills, increase productivity and use the computer as a writing instrument. Successful completion may earn 11th and 12th grade students 3 college credits at Century College.

225 COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm or better

This course is designed to prepare you to use the computer as a personal tool. It serves as preparation for other computer courses as well as provides you with an opportunity to apply computer capabilities to your personal use and career exploration. The integrated program Microsoft Works will be used with a focus on word processing, database management, spreadsheets and charting, and integration of applications.

224 WEB PAGE DESIGN

Open to: Grades 10 - 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Computer Applications or Computer Communications

Learn what’s involved in creating a World Wide Web page. This course will present basic principles of web page design and introduce students to web page creation through the use of an HTML editor, FrontPage. Students learn how to create and enhance Web pages with HTML, links, graphics, tables, frames and forms. Successful completion may earn 11th and 12th grade students 3 college credits at Century College.

230 COMPUTER COMMUNICATIONS

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm or better

Students will learn to use Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word to create computerized presentations and print documents. In addition, you will be introduced to the concepts, techniques and applications of desktop publishing using Microsoft Publisher. The Internet will be used to research and access information for preparing documents. Successful completion of BOTH this course AND 231, Excel and Access, during the 11th or 12th grades may earn students 3 college credits at Century College.

231 EXCEL AND ACCESS

Open to: Grades 11 & 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm or better

This course is designed for students who wish to have a hands-on knowledge of Microsoft Excel, an electronic spreadsheet, and Microsoft Access, a database program. Successful completion of BOTH this course AND 230, Computer Communications, during the 11th or 12th grades may earn students 3 college credits at Century College.

232 MULTIMEDIA FOR BUSINESS APPLICATIONS

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Web Page Design or considerable knowledge of HTML

Multimedia enhancements are used in multiple business applications such as Web page design, advertising, marketing and desktop publishing. This advanced course is designed to familiarize students with the creation and management of digital images and multimedia – for the printed page as well as the Web. Students will use a variety of software – including Photoshop and Flash – as well as hardware to enhance electronic multimedia communications. Scanners, printers and digital cameras will be used in image creation.

GENERAL BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTING

Accounting I and II comprise a two-trimester program designed for those who are interested in the business application of accounting. Personal Financial Management is a trimester course for those who want a knowledge of personal finance.

210 ACCOUNTING I

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Accounting I is designed to help those who are interested in entering the field of business, as well as to provide instruction in accounting activities that are useful in personal business transactions. The complete accounting cycle is presented, along with learning how to keep a simple set of accounting records for a small business. Students will prepare a trial balance, determine profit and loss, prepare income statements and balance sheets, as well as handle checking accounts.

Accounting concepts will be taught, along with automated accounting.

211 ACCOUNTING II

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Accounting I

Students will apply their knowledge of accounting concepts and principles using manual and computerized accounting to process data. Advanced units will be introduced in payroll, cash receipts and cash payments, depreciation and fixed assets, partnerships, and corporations. Students will develop an understanding of how financial data is used to make business decisions.

By studying accounting for two terms, students will be able to develop skills and knowledge necessary to perform competently in an entry-level position and be prepared for college level accounting

216 PERSONAL FINANCE

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Personal Finance provides instruction on money management skills and techniques. Students learn to manage a checking account and utilize other banking services. Investment options are investigated, apartment rentals are researched and tax forms are prepared. Auto and home insurance concepts, buying a car, using credit and creating and using a budget are all components of this course. Personal Finance is designed to help young adults make wise and informed financial decisions.

Note: It is recommended that students do not sign up for both this course and Consumer Skills: Living On Your Own, since course material overlaps.

240 INTRODUCTION TO LAW

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to increase personal legal awareness and enhance students’ ability to use critical thinking skills to solve legal problems. Court cases, both current and historical are used to help students learn about how our legal system has developed over time and the impact the judicial branch of government contributes to and changes the course of our society. The difference between civil and criminal law is distinguished in this course. Students will participate in a mock trial at the conclusion of the course. This is an excellent preliminary course for students considering a career in law.

242 INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This course will introduce students to the customs and cultural differences of doing business in and with people of other countries. Students will also learn the basics of how international businesses operate and advertising/market trends used around the world to entice customers. It is a very real possibility that your future career will expect you to interact and travel outside the U.S. due to our ever-growing global economy. This is an advanced Business course requiring both research and presentation skills.

245 ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION

Open to: All Grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

In this course students will develop an understanding of advertising and promotion, how it is used in business and its effect on students as consumers. Students will develop the skills and strategies needed to develop newspaper, TV, and radio advertisements. Each student will have the opportunity to develop an ad campaign for a business, product or service of their choice.

Students taking the Advertising and Promotion and/or Sales and Marketing classes may have the opportunity to qualify for the Marketing/DECA program.

250 SALES AND MARKETING

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

The Sales and Marketing class will help you develop self-confidence and acquire the ability to sell yourself and market products and services. This will be accomplished through the study and application of selling techniques, marketing strategies, and the development of skills needed for job applications and interviewing. You will be able to practice the proper techniques of selling through classroom presentations and interviewing. **The application and interview training is excellent preparation for college bound students. This course will provide strategies and communications skills that will help you in almost every career field.

255 ENTREPRENEURSHIP – STARTING/OWNING A BUSINESS

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Do you want to be the boss? If so, this is the course for you. You will have the opportunity to learn in a hands-on fashion how to develop a business plan for starting and owning their own business. Through activities including computer simulations and the Mini-Business Challenge, students will learn about the attitudes and skills needed to be successful. Emphasis will be put on marketing analysis, promotion, human resource management, operations, pricing and competition.

256 ENTERTAINMENT AND SPORTS MARKETING

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Do you love sports, music, or movies? Want to expand your skills in business or marketing? If you can’t turn pro, then combine your sports and entertainment sense with a business bottom line. Compete against your friends each week in a fantasy sports league and own and manage your own sports team. You will also create and market a new attraction at a theme park. Topics include: product placement in movies, stadium design, licensed merchandise, corporate sponsorship, promotion and public relations in the music industry, and careers in the sports and entertainment industries.

Marketing/DECA is an advanced course in career exploration and skill development in the areas of sales, marketing and management, and merchandising. Participation includes activities in the local chapter of DECA and Marketing students run their own business in the Student Store to gain additional business experience.

NOTE: MARKETING CLASSES MEET FOR A FULL YEAR. Approved students must register for all 3.

Prerequisite: Sales and Marketing AND application for enrollment (available in room S276) are required. The deadline for returning the application to the Business Department is 2/5/07. Advertising and Promotion is highly recommended.

Open to: Grades 11 and 12 ONLY 1 - 6 Credits/year
Prerequisite: co-registered in the Marketing/DECA class

Students are placed in a local business for internship training in sales and marketing. Other work experience options include the North High Polar Market and The Polar Den/Polar Loft.
Students may register for up to three trimesters and up to 2 class periods per trimester. If registering for two periods in a single trimester, use course numbers 0294/0296/0298.
