Art Courses

The Art Department welcomes any student with an interest in art. The purpose of all art courses is to increase your awareness of visual communication and to give you an opportunity to explore various art media while learning the skills and techniques involved

103 DESIGN

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This beginning course focuses on the art skills necessary to create good visual communication and presentations. The course is intended for any student who wants to learn about the basic fundamentals of art. Areas studied are: 2-dimensional design, sculpture, basic drawing and painting. This course has practical applications for anyone wishing to take other art courses in high school or who plans to pursue interests in related arts such as interior design, fashion design, landscape design or architecture. A $10 product fee will be charged.

109 CERAMICS I

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Pottery involves all the steps of making objects out of clay. You will be involved in the total process of creating with clay from planning and designing through glazing and firing. A variety of hand-building methods and an introduction to the potter’s wheel are included. Creativity and craftsmanship with clay are stressed. All functional pieces made in this class such as mugs, bowls, plates, etc. are lead-free and oven and dishwasher safe. A $15 product fee will be charged.

112 ADVANCED CERAMICS II

Open to: Grades 10 - 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Prerequisite Ceramics I

This advanced course will build on the skills learned in Ceramics and will introduce the students to new construction ideas and decoration techniques. Special focus will be on the production of creative works, reflecting mastery of advanced skills with an emphasis on decoration. A $15 product fee will be charged.

113 CLASSICAL AND CONTEMPORAY CLAY (CERAMICS III)

Open to: Grades 10 - 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Ceramics II and grade of B+ or better in both prior Ceramics classes (or Teacher Permission)

This is a high level course for the serious art student who wants to go beyond the basic knowledge and traditional techniques of clay. We will research, study and replicate ancient and modern clay styles and techniques. Students will experiment with alternative firing and forming methods, formulate their own glaze and truly experience the entire pottery studio environment from general upkeep to mixing clay and firing kilns. A $15 product fee will be charged. Teacher permission forms are available in Guidance.

116 DRAWING

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Any student who wishes to learn how to draw is welcome in this class for beginners. You do not need to know how to draw or shade as we will teach you how. Improvement will come naturally with concentration, practice, and a desire to learn.

118 PAINTING

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This class will teach you how to make watercolor and oil paintings. You do not have to be experienced in drawing to succeed. Your painting skills will improve naturally as a result of participating in the classroom activities and exercises. A $10 product fee will be charged.

120 ADVANCED DRAWING AND PAINTING

Open to: All grades
Prerequisite: Drawing or Painting 1 Credit

This course is for students who have completed drawing and painting and want to continue to improve and expand their skills. You will explore techniques and a personal style of creative expression. Oil or acrylic painting will be a major emphasis. A $10 product fee will be charged.

130 INTRO TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This photography class is for the student who wants to learn how to use digital technology to create powerful images. We will study historic and contemporary photographers, how digital cameras work and the fundamentals of photographic exposure. Students will work in Photoshop to perfect their artworks and will create a photography portfolio. A $15 product fee will be charged.


132 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intro to Digital Photography

Photography's impact as a unique means for transmitting visual information is explored. This class extends and develops ideas initiated in basic photography. Projects are designed to further students' understanding of photographic problem solving. A $15 product fee will be charged.

137/138/139 ART STUDIO

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Any of the advanced art courses and Teacher Permission. Forms are available in Guidance

This course is an independent studio course for the serious art student. You may enroll for, ceramics (137), drawing/painting (138) or photography (139). Only those students who are self-motivated and wish to develop an individual approach to their art will be given teacher permission. Artwork done in this course is expected to be of quality necessary to enter into competition. You are given help with developing portfolios needed to enter art school and help with producing art for scholarships. A small product fee may be charged. Teacher permission forms are available in the Guidance Office.
